DUTY - OUT OF LINE (Germany, 2021)

writer/ director / edit / choreography / D.O.P

Finally I can release this after having completed its festival rounds 🙂

I started filming this movie during Autumn 2019 then continued in early Summer of 2020. Filming took 10 days in total which is actually a lot compared to other works. On 2 of those 10 nights we had to wrap early due to heavy rain. Since I wanted to shoot at night using artificial lighting I had to set up the lights for each shot which was quite time consuming (I still can't believe I could fit all of the equipment in my little car). I'm no way an experienced gaffer nor D.O.P. but I'm quite happy with how the look turned out in the end. I was aiming for an 80s Hong Kong cinema retro look so I did some considerable amount of image tweaking in post.

Growing up with Hong Kong action cinema the influence it had on this movie is fairly evident. I took some inspiration from the movie In the Line of Duty 4 starring Cynthia Khan and Donnie Yen in terms of characters, overall look, obviously the title, and to a bigger extend the music. ITLOD4 features one of the best fight action soundtrack so I took the final piece (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4owL...) as direct reference to use in composing the music for our movie (done exceptionally by none other than Garth Knight who some of you might know).

This marked the second time collaborating with stuntwoman/martial artist Julia Schunevitsch who did a brilliant job. We were going for an old school style of fighting including animal styles and Julia could adapt really well to it - thanks to her background in traditional martial arts and dance. Honestly I don't know any other girl at this moment who could have pull it off the way she did. Props to Khoi Chau who played the naively sexist scientist.

I've known Khoi from when we were filming Luc Van Tien aka Kung Fu Warrior in Vietnam in 2016 and always thought he has a great talent for acting. He stepped back from doing screenfighting a while ago and although it seems like he's not doing much during the fight, his experience in timing and coordination were vital to make the choreography work.

A big thanks to Andy Long Nguyen who came out just to help me on this project and I've got to say - I would not have been able to make this movie without his support. This is actually an Andy Long Stuntteam project at its core as I got many of the 1st generation members of the team together 😃

Big thank you also to Niklas Kinzel and Hannah Katharina for the awesome rigging and Fisal Campbell for assisting. Markus Ketterer did a wonderful job as usual on the camera for the days he was there. Honored to also have Philip Silvera there for a couple of nights to assist.

Lastly I want to express major gratitude to Ged Leitch aka Garth Knight to whom I reached out to compose the music for the movie. I stumbled across his works on Youtube (you gotta check out his works: https://soundcloud.com/garth_knight) and I immediately fell in love with his 80s style synth beats. I knew he would be the perfect choice for the movie and I was overjoyed when he actually agreed to arrange the music. And boy did he deliver. I can't stress enough how happy I am with the music he created. He absolutely NAILED it
