EIN FREUND - EIN GUTER FREUND (Germany, 2021)

When it comes to food - friendship ends...or does it?

This short film was shot over a period of 4 nights including fight choreography. As a major fan of the golden era of Hong Kong martial arts action cinema all my work is heavily influenced by it. With this short I put extra emphasize on capturing its trademark features starting from fight choreography, rythm, camera work and sound design to name the major quilities. Whereas I understand that handheld camera is a stilistic way of filming and used to accompany and enhance certain moods of a movie and fight scene I generally prefer a more steady and clear framing. This type of camera work also worked well with the style and pacing of this particular movie. Of course there is no way of hiding any unclean movements through tighter angles and shaky camera work. That makes it more challenging for the perfomers and is more time consuming but at the end is more rewarding in my eyes.

Dimitri Vujicic did a fabulous job in this movie. Many years back Dimitri has been quite active doing stunts (very daring ones that is!) and screen fighting but then stopped due to an injury of his foot. Only recently was he brought back by Andy Long into the business and since then his screen fighting path has picked up again (say hi to Keanu Reeves!). He is very particular about his performance (maybe even more than me) but I'm not complaining! In my oppinion it takes this kind of critical mindset to produce quality work.

Mark Zheng with whom I've worked previously on a production in Turkey was responsible for the cinematography and I'm very pleased with his delivery. He took away so much workload by setting all the lights and providing all the gear (except for the dolly :p). He is basically a one man band and I can only dream of all the awesome equipment that he has.
