KARATE SENSEI BOB (Germany, 2023)

writer/ director / edit / choreography

Hey guys, hope you enjoy this new short! What was supposed to be just a spontanous fun project then turned into quite the elaborate shoot. Mark, my D.P. one day texted me that he could get hold of a Red Monstro camera and a set of sweet prime lenses for a couple of days and that we should maybe grab hold of this opportunity and shoot sth. That pretty much got the wheel spinning and there I was wrecking my brain to come up with a concept. I had this cool costume lying around which was actually reserved for another project I was planning but since I had nothing better at hand I used this costume and created some sort of character based on it. I imagined Dimitri to be playing some sort of cocky wanna be hero, but fleshing out the character really took place during our car ride down to Cologne. Heck, even the decision of Dimi wearing a Karate Gi was done during the drive and we bought a uniform on our way! Shooting took place during May but the nights were still very cold with temperatures going down to around 3C°! It made the shoot quite tough tbh and Mark was starting to shiver at some point. Me and Dimi were somewhat fine since we could keep ourselves warm through our fighting. Dimi has also been dealing with a foot injury for years and the cold caused even more restriction in the mobility. As much as I liked my costume, moving around in it wasn't the most fun either. Since choreography or stunts-wise there's nothing much to rave about tbh, I tried to put more emphasize on visual aesthetics rather than display of martial prowess. I think for being spontanous project without much prep time it still turned out quite ok. It shows how much improvement you can get out of a project through proper post production. The importance of good sound is still underrated. I wanna give props to Mark here who once again did a fantastic job with the lighting and camera operation. John Brandt who took care of the focus pulling was a very helpful ally during this project. And Dimi ist just the man. This guy is so talented and humble, it's always such a pleasure to work with him. For the music I got the same composer on board as I did on my other short film 'Duty - Out of Line'. Known under his artist's name 'Garth Knight' he once again delivered some awesome tunes. Please check out his work!
